In this section of scripture, Paul is expressing his joy in the Philippi church and how much he longs to be with them again. He wants them to be comforted in knowing that no matter where he is, he has confidence in them; knowing that they will continue to grow in Christ and will carry out their good work of the gospel.
Paul let’s them know that he thinks of them often and when he does he is filled with joy. He prays that they will continue to grow in Christ, gaining more knowledge and insight so they will be able to discern right from wrong.
Paul had a special place in his heart for this church. They responded well to the gospel, they embraced it and had the same desire as Paul – to preach the true gospel of Jesus Christ. They also had a desire to grow in Christ and this pleased Paul.
Much like America, Philippi was a city with abundant resources, a diverse population and housed many religious beliefs. When you walked into the city you were bombarded with religious symbols. There were some struggles in growing a Christ-Minded church. There were issues with disunity, false teachings and dangers of greed and desires of the flesh. (Does this sound familiar to you?)
Regardless of the struggles, Paul knew they were hungry and desired to walk a righteous path in Christ. These attributes were a sure way to spread the gospel of Christ throughout the Gentiles, the mission Paul was called to do.
God knows your situation, he knows where you are and what your surroundings are like. God also knows your desire to walk a righteous path in a Christ-Minded way.
Stay Hungry for Christ!
He wants you to be filled with joy every time you are with those that have the same spirit and partnership in Christ. Our joy needs to be increased over and over until it overflows into everything we do and everywhere we go.
Stay Hungry for Joy!
This overflowing joy is a way to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout our neighborhoods. Continue the good work that began in you with those around you.
Stay hungry for spreading the good news!
God wants you to be comforted and know that he is with you, no matter what your surroundings are like. God is filled with immeasurable joy knowing that YOU desire to gain more knowledge of Christ and that you want insight to discern right from wrong – to be righteous in his sight.
Stay Hungry for knowledge!
Rest assured, God has a special place in his heart for you and he yearns for the time when we can all be together and sing praises of joy forever and ever AMEN.
Stay Hungry for God’s Promise!
We should take the prayer that Paul had for the Philippians and apply it to ourselves. Personalize this prayer (put your name where it says you or your) to remind you to stay focused on becoming closer to Christ.
“…that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ.” Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)
